Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are essential for ensuring the reliability and proper functioning of electrical grids with a high penetration of renewable energy sources. A typical BESS project has a revenue stacking model based on 3 sources of income:

      • Energy Trading: Charging the batteries during periods of low electricity prices, such as when there is excess solar generation, and discharging them during high-price periods, such as peak demand in the late afternoon.
      • Provision of Ancillary Services: Offering ancillary services, such as frequency regulation to the system operator allows the leveraging of the batteries’ rapid response times and operational flexibility.
      • Capacity Payments: Earning income from available capacity in markets where capacity recognition mechanisms are in place.

BESS systems are a fundamental piece to ensure the safety and correct operation of an electrical system with a strong presence of renewable generation. For all this, they have three possible sources of remuneration:

      • Purchase and sale of energy: charge the batteries in hours of low prices (when there is an excess of solar generation, for example), and discharge in hours of high prices (peak hour in the late afternoon).
      • Provide ancillary services to the system operator, thanks to its excellent short response times and manageability
      • Receive income from available capacity, in markets in which capacity recognition exists

Antuko has more than
3 GW OF BESS under development

Chile:
2 GW under development

The substantial penetration of solar generation in the northern region of the country and it’s poor transmission system has led to significant price and energy dispatch distortions. Antuko has identified the critical nodes within the system and developed a portfolio of projects aimed at enhancing the stability of the electrical grid.

España & Portugal:
1 GW under development

The recent entry into commercial operation of large solar and wind power plants is creating severe energy curtailment events in Spain and Portugal that are critical for the owners of these assets, as well as for their financiers. Antuko develops projects that seek to normalize this situation.
